Serengeti National Park
The Heart of the African Wilderness
Serengeti National Park is one of the most iconic and celebrated wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Located in northern Tanzania, it spans approximately 14,750 square kilometers (5,700 square miles), offering a vast, stunning landscape of endless plains, dotted with acacia trees, kopjes (rocky outcrops), rivers, and woodlands. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, which extends into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Its name derives from the Maasai word “Siringet,” meaning “endless plains,” a fitting description of this spectacular park.
Wildlife Experiences
The Serengeti is world-renowned for its remarkable wildlife, hosting one of the most diverse and concentrated populations of animals in Africa. The park is home to the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros), but it’s most famous for the Great Migration. This annual spectacle involves over 1.5 million wildebeests, 200,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles moving in a circular pattern between the Serengeti and Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing grounds. Predators such as lions, hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs follow the herds, creating dramatic predator-prey encounters that define the cycle of life in the Serengeti.
The park’s predators, especially lions, are a major draw. Serengeti is believed to have one of the highest concentrations of lions in the world, with around 3,000 individuals. Cheetahs are frequently seen on the open plains, and leopards often inhabit the acacia woodlands, usually sighted lounging in trees.
Elephants, giraffes, hippos, and crocodiles add to the diversity of large mammals. In addition, the park is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 500 species recorded, including ostriches, secretary birds, and kori bustards.
Things to Do in Serengeti National Park
Game Drives
Game drives are the most popular activity in the Serengeti, offering close encounters with a wide variety of animals. Whether it’s an early morning drive to catch predators in action or a late afternoon excursion to see elephants at a waterhole, every drive is filled with the potential for unforgettable sightings. Guided by experienced rangers, game drives allow visitors to explore different parts of the park, each with its own unique ecosystem and wildlife.
Guided Walking Safaris
For those who prefer a more intimate and adventurous experience, guided walking safaris are available in certain areas of the Serengeti. Accompanied by armed guides, these walks offer a chance to explore the African bush on foot, learning about the smaller details of the ecosystem, such as plants, insects, and tracks left by animals. Walking safaris provide a thrilling sense of immersion in the wilderness, allowing you to experience the Serengeti in a way that is impossible from a vehicle.
Photographic Safaris
The Serengeti is a photographer’s dream, offering endless opportunities to capture stunning images of wildlife, landscapes, and the dramatic African sky. Photographic safaris are designed to cater to both amateur and professional photographers, with expert guides who understand the best angles, lighting, and timing for capturing that perfect shot. These safaris often focus on specific wildlife events, such as the Great Migration or predator interactions.
Bush Dining
Experiencing a meal in the middle of the Serengeti is a unique and memorable event. Bush dining allows you to enjoy gourmet meals surrounded by the sights and sounds of the African wilderness. Whether it’s a breakfast by the Mara River after an early morning game drive or a candlelit dinner under the stars, bush dining is an experience that combines the best of luxury and nature.
Best Times to Visit
Serengeti National Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit largely depends on what you want to experience:
December to March:
This period marks the calving season, especially in the southern Serengeti plains, where wildebeests give birth to their young. It’s a great time for predator action as lions and other carnivores take advantage of the vulnerable calves.June to October:
This is the dry season and one of the best times for game viewing as animals gather around water sources, and the bush is less dense, making wildlife easier to spot. The Grumeti and Mara River crossings during this period are iconic, as thousands of wildebeests and zebras plunge into the water in their migration.November to December:
The short rains bring fresh green grass to the Serengeti, signaling the start of the migration as herds begin to move south. The park is less crowded, and the landscape becomes lush, attracting many animals back to the plains.
